|Why register .gl?|
|Greenland is the world's largest island, situated between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. The population is largely concentrated on the southwest coast, while the rest of the island is sparsely populated. Greenland is now mostly covered by ice and snow, but it really was green... over 2.5 million years ago. Interestingly, the ancient dirt was cryogenically frozen for millions of years under 2 plus miles of ice. Greenland is famous for its vast tundra and immense glaciers, whaling and fishing, and it's midnight sun. And did you know that Greenland has no roads or railways to connect towns? You travel between towns by water or air... or dogsled.
If you conduct business from within Greenland it is time to register a .gl domain extension. Registering a dot 'GL' country code extension (top level domain name) will increase credibility for your business across the globe. Why? Country-code domains are meant specifically for businesses that do business within a particular country--in this case, Greenland. The .com domain (and other generic TLDs) are not targeted and that online space is saturated--and you likely already have the .com for your business.
Extend your brand presence with a more relevant, shorter domain--a ccTLD that differentiates you from competitors. Identify yourself as an official Greenlander business owner and give your clients and constituents more confidence as they interact with you online. Country code domains also help you rank higher in local search results.
Instructions for creating and using a domain name in the GL zone.
Since a domain name is used internationally and in diverse computer programs there are certain rules which must be observed to create a domain name which can be considered legal within the GL zone. These rules are based on standards and recommendations from RFC?s, de-facto standards and experience on the Internet.
The domain name is limited to the following symbols:
A domain name may have no more than 63 characters (in addition to .gl) and may not begin or end with a hyphen. In addition, the following are noteworthy:
Domain names consisting only of numbers can create problems. There will be certain applications, etc. that can not utilize nor find such names on the Internet, so avoid such a name.
There is no difference between small and capital letters in a domain name. For example, tele.gl, TEle.GL and teLE.gl are all recognized as the same domain name.
The domain name ought to have between 3 and 25 characters (in addition to .gl)
The Danish letters, æ, ø, and å can not be used as part of a domain name and are normally translated as ae, oe and aa on the Internet.
