.MX (Mexico) scheduled to launch May 1, 2009

The registry operator of the ccTLD for the .MX domain extension, NIC.MX, has announced that it will make domains at the second level available for registration. Businesses will soon be able to register “” verses “”. In an effort to help registrants protect brands associated with existing third level domains such COM.MX, .NET.MX, .ORG.MX, .EDU.MX, or .GOB.MX, NIC.MX has established a process by which current registrants may receive priority status to register their existing names under new .MX extension. To meet priority status requirements, the existing domain names must have been registered on or prior to March 1, 2009. Priority registration, or the pre-registration sunrise, for existing domain name holders begins on May 1, 2009.

.MX Launch Schedule:

Pre-Registration - May 1, 2009 - July 31, 2009

Companies with existing COM.MX, .NET.MX, .ORG.MX, .EDU.MX, or .GOB.MX registrations on or prior to March 1, 2009 can pre-register an identical .MX domain name

Application information submitted during this period must be the same as the existing WHOIS contact information associated with the common third level domain

In the event that multiple requests are made for the same .MX domain, the requestor with the earliest creation date on its third level .MX will be awarded the domain.

All domain registration request must contain at least 3 characters, but not more than 63

Waiting Period - August 1, 2009 - August 31, 2009

During this period all domain requests submitted during the Pre-registration period will be processed and awarded by NIC.MX

No new domain requests for second level .MX domain will be accepted.
