Introduction to the im domain
Introduction
The Isle of Man is a self-governing crown dependency located within the British Isles although constitutionally separate from the United Kingdom. In 1996 the Isle of Man Government obtained permission to use the im National Top Level Domain (TLD) and has ultimate responsibility for its use. The domain is managed on a daily basis by Advanced Systems Consultants, an Island-based Internet Service Provider. A naming committee consisting of representatives from the Manx Government and local industry considers all domain applications. For more information on the functions of the Naming Committee click here.
Why register a domain?
By registering your domain name it enables you or your organisation to be uniquely identified on the Internet and therefore allows others wishing to contact you to do so easily and without risk of being misdirected (eg. www.mycompany.co.im).
How is the domain structured?
The im domain is structured similarly to that of many other National TLDs and comprises of the following sub-level domains:
co.im For use by companies, partnerships, sole traders and other commercial organisations
ltd.co.im For use by private limited companies
plc.co.im For use by public limited companies
net.im For use by Internet service providers
gov.im For use by the Isle of Man Government
org.im For use by individuals and non-profit-making organisations
nic.im For use within the im domain supporting infrastructure
ac.im For use by academic establishments and organisations
Who can register im domain names?
Although primarily formed for use by organisations and individuals in the Isle of Man, the im domain is open to everyone who can demonstrate a reasonable right to register such a name.
You may apply for domain names which are either:-
1. Your registered company name;
2. A recognised variation on your company name e.g. initials;
3. Your recognised Trading Name(s);
4. Your organisation's/company's recognised Brand Name(s);
However, ltd.co.im and plc.co.im are solely for companies registered as such with the Isle of Man Companies Registry and a copy of the company's Certificate of Incorporation must be submitted with your application.
All domain name applications are subject to the approval of the Naming Committee. Some names such as generic or misleading names or those which are an internationally recognised trading name or trade mark may also be refused at the discretion of the naming committee.
Function of the Naming Committee
Names are allocated on a first come, first served basis and when you submit your request online, the naming committee is obliged to reply within 3 working days. Approval or rejection of a name is based on the facts known at the time by the naming committee.
Should the naming committee object to your domain you have the right to appeal. You must submit an appeal by email together with further evidence to substantiate your application. This will be resubmitted to the Naming Committee for further consideration. If the appeal is rejected and this is unacceptable to you a final ruling can be requested from the Isle of Man Government’s Information Services Division. The ruling from the Isle of Man Government is final and binding
What are the restrictions on my choice of domain name?
Content of Name
The domain name must begin with an alpha-numeric character.(e.g. a-z or 0-9) and consist of either letters, digits or hyphens (-).
Length of Name
